Enamel bowls, brass, printmaking paper, soy sauce, turmeric, coffee, olive oil, tea, cocoa powder, and smoked paprika.

This pair of Soviet-era enamel bowls, provided by Bowl Interprets, were once everyday containers for food, carrying family reunions. They fit together perfectly, and this quality reminds me of the shape of a book. The bowls are transformed into an accordion book which holds over seventy languages repeating the same phrase: “Dinner’s ready!” It is the simplest connection between human and objects.

The bowls used to hold food are instead holding words. On the back of the pages are spices from around the world: soy sauce, turmeric, coffee, olive oil, tea, cocoa powder, smoked paprika… The stains and scents echo the origin of each page.

Today, goods from everywhere easily find their way to our tables. This work is also a snapshot of that global flow: a pair of Soviet-era bowls, carrying calls in different languages and spices from different continents, are transformed into a book that can be held in your hands.
